Being Filled with the Holy Spirit
(Move through the first part this lesson
quickly because the application will take
you about 20 minutes.)
Ask: What people, places, or things,
help you to feel secure in life? (People
could be parents, friends. Places could
be home or church. Things could be bank
account or certain possessions).
Ask: What are some things that upset
or take away these securities from you? What breaks
that feeling of safety?
Say: As believers, what breaks our
peace of mind, joy, and that secure feeling in our devotion
to God?
The answer is sin. (Remember God will never leave a
true believer once He's in their life, we're secure
there).
Ask: What is the progression of sin
according to James 1:13-15? How does it happen?
13 When tempted, no one should say, "God is
tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil,
nor does he tempt anyone;
14 but each one is tempted when, by his own evil
desire, he is dragged away and enticed.
15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth
to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth
to death.
Ryrie Study Bible notes:
Vs. 1:14 dragged away and enticed. The picture behind
these words is that of the hunter or fisherman luring
his prey from its safe retreat.
Vs. 1:15 The progression is frightening and certain:
lust, sin, death (cf. Eve's temptation, Gen. 3:6-22).
Ask: What in your opinion is the key
to victory over temptation and sin?
Application:
Pass out a copy of the booklet "Have You Made
the Wonderful Discovery of the Spirit Filled Life?"
Take the time to read the contents carefully, out
loud to everyone as they read along. This is a powerful
concept. It will take you up to 20 minutes to carefully
read it. You may want to pause from time to time and
ask "Does this make sense so far?" Be sure
to give everyone a chance to pray the prayer towards
the end of the booklet. Pray for wisdom and openness
as you read it.
You view the booklet at http://www.ccci.org/spirit/index.html or
call your Campus Crusade for Christ staff member.
